Below are direct links to the State offices for Apostille services and information. Each Apostille must be issued by the County, State, or Government Jurisdiction in which the original document was issued by.

Below the state links is a detailed "Do it Yourself" guidance specifically for documents that need an Apostille and originated in New York City or New York State .

There are also many many private companies and websites that offer expedited apostille services to the general public.

Note: The instructions below are only required if you need to get an Apostille certificate for a Birth Certificate or a Death Certificate, which also requires a “Letter of Exemplification”. If you are looking to get a marriage license Apostille certificate, you can go straight to item 2.

Note: Only the person who is on the documentation can apply unless it is for a minor child.

Marriage licenses – even from NYC – can skip to item 2.

1) To apply for a NYC original Birth Certificate or Death Certificate, and a letter of exemplification (this letter is required for both a birth certificate and a death certificate), you can email the by sending an email to [email protected]  and explain why you need the documents urgently or you can try going to 125 Worth street, officially they do NOT allow walk-ins, but many people have been able to go, and get the documentation that they needed, (actual entrance is on 45 Lafayette street – around the building), in Manhattan and have proof of immediate need, and a plane ticket showing immediate travel.

2)  Take the original Birth Certificate or Death Certificate, and a letter of exemplification (this letter is required for both a birth certificate and a death certificate) to the NYC clerks office at 60 center street, New York NY 10007 – (646) 386-5955.   Need $3.00 cash, for them to stamp the document.  Walk-ins welcome – but they are closed between 1 PM and 2 PM.

3) Send the documents to the NYS Dept of State with the proper form requesting the Apostille- cost is $10, which you can fill in a credit card number on the form. You can call (518) 474-4429 and request an appointment, which can be at 123 William Street, New York, NY 10038.  An alternative option is to send the documents to Albany – which you can send overnight and include a prepaid return envelope for overnight back – to NYS Dept of State, Division of Licensing Services, Apostille and Authentication Unit, PO Box 22002, Albany NY, 12201-2001. Please note that you need to use the United States Postal Service, as they are the only overnight carrier that delivers to a PO Box.

For an apostille request for a document issued anywhere in New York State, but outside of NYC, you need to do the following:

1) Have the document certified by a New York State official or County Clerk

Birth, Death, and Marriage certificates and Certificate of Divorce issued by a local or county official or county Department of Health must first be certified by the County Clerk of the county where the document was issued.

Birth, Death, and Marriage certificates issued by the New York State Department of Health and bearing the signature of the Director of Vital Statistics or NYS Registrar may be submitted for Apostille or Certificate of Authentication and do not require a County Clerk certification.

Notarized documents must be certified by the County Clerk of the County where the notary is certified to notarize.

2)  Send the documents to the NYS Dept of State with the proper form requesting the Apostille- cost is $10, which you can fill in a credit card number on the form.
