There’s No Place Like Home – Amudim Weekly Recap

There’s No Place Like Home

Being back home does not always bring the feelings of safety and stability we need, especially when old traumas and issues resurface. But finding the right support and guidance within whatever environment in which we find ourselves is the key to true and lasting peace of mind. And while dealing with family and personal struggles simultaneously can be challenging, Amudim is always here to help find a way towards healing.

Shmuel*, a 27-year-old recently returned home from Israel due to Covid, reached out to us feeling alone and unsure of how to proceed. He grew up in a dysfunctional home with a father who suffers from intense anxiety and depression and is heavily medicated; Shmuel faces his own chronic anxiety, and has always struggled with maintaining a positive relationship with his parents.

After traveling to Israel several years ago to study in yeshiva, Shmuel found a warm and caring environment and a community of support and rebbeim with whom he established strong and personal connections. Yet because he was forced to suddenly move back to the States, and without any proper planning of how to reintegrate with his family, Shmuel found himself panicking and feeling like his life was unraveling. He reached out to Amudim after having seen several advertisements in local papers, feeling like he had nowhere else to turn.

Our case manager immediately recommended a therapist who could also provide the spiritual guidance that Shmuel felt had been abruptly torn from him; he felt more than ready to begin counseling and try navigating his way through his overwhelming feelings. The case manager also suggested techniques and tools to assist Shmuel in dealing with his father. We have maintained regular contact with Shmuel and his therapist, and are happy to report that Shmuel is regularly seeking treatment and reports feeling much happier and at ease with himself; he now sees himself moving forward in a healthy way with whatever life brings next.

Whether at home or abroad, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you or someone you know is struggling, based on either acute or chronic circumstances. Amudim is here for you.

We work every day to change the lives of those in need. We need your help to continue these efforts.
