This is the story of Isaac*, a 29-year-old in the midst of a difficult journey, whose incredible actions leave me honored and humbled to share his story. He felt inspired to find a way to help others while he was dealing with his pain, just as we were trying to help him, an incredible example for all of us.
Isaac was sexually abused as a child; each encounter with his abuser triggered unbearable PTSD episodes. When Isaac shared his secret with his family, they reached out to Amudim; our case manager guided them to appropriate, trauma based support. But the damage ran too deep; after a year, it was clear that individual therapy was not enough.
After conferring with Isaac’s therapist, Amudim identified a residential treatment program that could meet his needs. Isaac is now embarking on this stage of his journey: 30 days of treatment without the triggers of daily life. Another month in a step-down program to help him re-acclimate with continued support. Amudim will collaborate with Isaac and his treatment team to help him build a healthy life.
But this is not the end of Isaac’s story. As Amudim was raising funds and locating the proper program, Isaac began a social media campaign to tell his story and offer hope and gratitude. Many reached out to share their stories of abuse.
Isaac tells of a night when he saw a man crying in his car. He approached the man, who recognized Isaac from his social media posts. The man shared that he too was an abuse victim; he felt that he had failed as a father and husband and wanted to end his life. Isaac sat with him and listened and gave the man Amudim’s number. By the conversation’s end, the man assured Isaac that he felt safe for the night. Later, he called Isaac to thank him for the referral and support.
Isaac, about to begin intense treatment, still wanted to pay it forward and help others. He has verbalized his desire to continue the path of not only helping himself but others as well.
Amudim is here for anyone in need. Please never hesitate to call. And know that you are part of a community of many like Isaac, who reminds us that inspiration and hope work in all directions and can be found in the most unexpected circumstances.
Each week, Amudim fields calls covering a wide range of crises and addressing various human concerns, including addiction, depression, abuse, health and domestic emergencies and many others. We track the calls and breakdown of issues for many reasons, foremost of which is to consistently improve and strengthen our knowledge and ability to address community’s needs.
After the COVID pandemic hit, Amudim immediately saw the global impact with a dramatic increase in calls for help. Individuals who were suffering based on quarantine/shutdown concerns. People who had lost their jobs, family members, their sense of stability and safety. We are grateful to have been able to step up to the plate to provide much needed assistance; and we could not have done any of this without the generous support of you, our community and partners.
