Aviva* was nearing the end of her year in seminary when she worked up the courage to reach out to a teacher she trusted. She confided that she had been sexually abused by her brother over the course of several years but had never told anyone. Recently, she had begun to notice that her anxiety around boys and men was very high, and she was having physical symptoms such as heart palpitations whenever she came into close proximity with a male of any age. She knew she needed help. The teacher referred Aviva to the Amudim Israel office; however, since the school year was almost over and she would soon be returning to America, the Israel office sent her to one of our case managers in New York.
Our case manager spoke with Aviva and worked with her insurance provider to find her a qualified therapist located near the college she would be attending. Aviva began seeing the therapist and reported feeling the beginnings of hope and healing after just a few sessions. Amudim’s case manager continuously checked in over the next several months, and received reports that Aviva was making excellent progress.
Fast forward two years, when our case manager received a call from Aviva with the exciting news that she was engaged. She was seeking a kallah teacher who is knowledgeable and trained in working with victims of sexual abuse and wondered if Amudim could guide her in the right direction. We referred her to an amazing teacher with whom our clients have worked in the past. We were also able to provide her with several names of gynecologists who are sensitive to the needs of sexual abused women.
We are thrilled to have been part of this healing process and know that Aviva has found a good man and is equipped with the tools and support to G-d Willing ensure a healthy and happy marriage and future.
