Healing from Trauma

June 25, 2021

Dear Amudim Family,

Izzy*, a 30 year old father of four, came to Amudim when the after effects of the trauma he had suffered as a child became too much to bear. For many years, Izzy wallowed in guilt and shame because, as a child, he had been sexually and physically abused by a close family member. Izzy had never confided in anyone, nor sought out help. Izzy believed that once he was married and became a father, he would put those terrible days behind him and would never look back.

The daily grind of dealing with triggers and undealt with childhood pain eventually became too much to bear. Izzy reached out to Amudim, desperately seeking a lifeline. He had seen an ad for one of our events posted on his shul notice board and decided that day that he was going to make the call. After listening to Izzy’s story, our case manager saw immediately that he needed a trauma trained therapist to help him heal. Izzy was relieved to finally have unburdened himself about what had happened and to have found a source of comfort and support.

Our case manager continued to follow up over the next several months. Izzy is now approaching the end of his second year of therapy and slowly, but steadily, he continues to unravel the past in order to build a healthier future for himself and his family. While the journey has not been easy, Izzy is grateful to Amudim for helping him find the much needed and appropriate support.
