The Battle to Break Free

March 25, 2022

There is no minimum age for pain or addiction; and the suffering an individual endures when faced with these challenges is only compounded by the impact it has on those closest to him. Sometimes it can seem like there is no way out. But with the right combination of unconditional love and appropriate resources, there is always hope for a better tomorrow.

After hearing about Amudim from their son’s principal, Daniel’s* parents reached out to us, desperate for guidance on how to help their son who was spiraling out of control. At the young age of 15, Daniel was battling depression and drug addiction and had been hospitalized twice within the same number of months after having overdosed. He had been suspended from school and was caught in an endless cycle of aggression and substance abuse. Daniel was a danger to himself and his younger siblings and parents; and they did not know how to intervene to get him the help he needed.

Our case manager made some calls and found space for Daniel at a top ranked hospital and helped the family with plans to transport him there by private ambulance. Daniel was initially resistant, but his parents were able to convince him to at least try the new treatment program; for better or worse, Daniel was miserable enough in his daily life to agree.

A month later, Daniel is midway through his in-patient rehabilitation, and our case manager is working with him, his doctors and his family on an appropriate plan for when he is discharged. Meanwhile, we maintain regular contact with the family to provide much needed emotional support, and have assisted with getting Daniel’s younger siblings into therapy to deal with the trauma they have sustained after seeing their brother’s crisis unfold.

While the whole family has a long way to go on their path to healing, we are hopeful that with the right support, both Daniel and his loved ones will find their way back to a healthier place and happier future for all of them.
If you or a loved one is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
