TRIGGER WARNING! Sexual Abuse.
Dear Amudim Family,
A mother is as happy as her unhappiest child, or so the saying goes. When our kids are struggling, all we want is to help and guide them to a better place. While every crisis is different and each child is unique, with the right support, a person can always find a new and better path if the current one isn’t working.
Amudim received a frantic call from Malka*, at a total loss of what to do with her son. Chaim* had just started ninth grade, and only a few months into the school year, had been suspended for poor behavior. He was at home, doing nothing each day and feeling too ashamed to reach out to friends or talk with his family. Chaim’s school offered no advice on how to assist him; yet they told Malka that if he didn’t get the proper help, he would be expelled.
Malka broke down during that first phone call, crying that she felt completely alone in dealing with this crisis and looking for any possible guidance. Her case manager patiently listened to Malka’s story and offered referrals as well as parenting advice. Within a week, Chaim had an appointment with a top therapist at a local clinic. The therapist met with Malka as well to guide her on speaking with her son about his challenges. Our case manager also set up an appointment with a psychiatrist to conduct a proper evaluation. Two weeks later, Chaim was switched to a different school more appropriate for his needs. We were overjoyed when a month after the transfer, Malka called us back, this time with happy tears. She shared that Chaim seems like a changed person, in both his behavior at school and home and his attitude and mood. He has joined the JV football team, is developing caring relationships with his rebbeim, and is flourishing in his new environment.
To date, Chaim is still attending weekly therapy and Malka maintains regular contact with her case manager to share updates. We are hopeful that with this new beginning, Chaim will continue to progress and enjoy a productive and happy high school experience.
If you or a loved one is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is a phone call away and here to help.
