Dear Amudim Family,
Raising children can be a difficult yet meaningful and joyful task. The pain of seeing one’s child struggle is hard, especially with all of life’s other challenges that don’t stop for just one crisis. But with the right support, any individual has the ability to change and heal; and the relief in seeing that gives all of us hope for the future.
Naomi*, a mother of three, called Amudim desperate to get help for her 16 year-old daughter, Leah*. Leah was having difficulty in school last year and had fallen in with a bad crowd. Our case manager learned that Leah had gotten into trouble at the beginning of the summer, was kicked out of camp, and that her school was threatening not to allow Leah to return in September. Naomi already felt overwhelmed with the holidays coming up and other work and family responsibilities and did not know where to turn for guidance. A close neighbor who knew what was going on mentioned Amudim and Naomi reached out, grateful to share her story and seek assistance with her daughter.
The case manager listened patiently and helped Naomi find a therapist for Leah, who surprised everyone by readily agreeing to go. This was clearly a child who had lost her way but wanted so much to find a path back to a healthier place. When several issues arose in therapy, Naomi reached out again, sharing that she wanted to find someone for her and her husband to talk to as well; our case manager helped them find a family therapist who could guide both parents and child through navigating their way to a better future.
Thankfully, Naomi recently called us with the good news that Leah’s school is happy to see her progress and continued willingness to work on herself, and that they are accepting Leah back into school this year. With continued follow ups and therapeutic work, we are hopeful that Leah and her family can look forward to a bright and sweeter new year.
