Overdoses have been increasing since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. In 2020, 245 people died every day from a drug overdose. Opioids were associated with 191 of the average daily deaths. This represents a 29.4% increase from 2019 and is thought to be from:
• the prevalence of fentanyl in non-prescribed substances
• psychological stress from the pandemic
• reduced healthcare services during the pandemic
What can you do?
Identifying, diagnosing, and treating substance use disorders can significantly the reduce risks for overdose.
