While addiction doesn’t exist in a vacuum, it can also arise suddenly and rapidly without any major or sudden life event. Especially with the easy access and pressure in today’s world, it has become a danger to which no one is immune. But there are so many resources out there to assist those who are struggling; and with determination and support, it is a battle that can be won.

When Kayla* reached out knowing she needed to make a drastic change, her background presented as a pretty average teenager’s life: a senior in high school, popular, good grades, no red flags in her family dynamic. But what started as sometimes raiding liquor cabinets with friends when their parents were away had led to Kayla’s driving while intoxicated and a car accident that could have easily led to tragic and permanent consequences.

Kayla thankfully realized that she had a problem and needed to seek help before it was too late. She was feeling disconnected and ashamed and reached out to a teacher with whom she was close to discuss her distress. After having seen Amudim help various students in the past, the teacher suggested she call us.

Our case manager listened without judgment and worked with Kayla to create a plan of action, including connecting her with a therapist, local AA meeting locations, and a virtual support group with other girls her age; the goal as always was to follow a multi pronged approach in providing resources and recovery options.

We are proud to report that Kayla is nearing her 60 day mark of sobriety. She is attending meetings, following up with her case manager on a weekly basis, and has shared that she is feeling more connected to her family and with her friends as she moves forward on this journey of finding a fresh start. Kayla knows how lucky she was, and she is committed to using this opportunity of a second chance.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
