Unite to Heal September 22-23, 2024
A family unit is at its strongest when all members are healthy and connected, but when one person hits a wall, it inevitably affects his loved ones as well. Amudim’s staff works to ensure that when someone needs our help, everyone impacted will have access to the necessary resources.
Gali* called us looking for support for her son, Steven*, a 16 year-old who had worked up the courage to ask for the help he desperately needed. Steven had been living at home in a mentally unstable state. He struggled with depression and anxiety for several years and eventually turned to drugs as an escape while distancing himself from the religious lifestyle of the rest of his family. Before his mom called, Steven was staying out all night, sleeping all day, and refusing to go to school. His destructive behavior was impacting his siblings, and his parents did not know how the family would emerge intact from this crisis. When Steven turned to his mom one day and admitted that he felt helpless and lost, she immediately called Amudim about how to best assist her son.
Our case manager leaned into the family’s need of support and reassured Gali that Steven’s plea was a positive sign, as many can’t find the motivation to take that first step. They determined that a residential treatment program was the best option and worked together to find an appropriate location that accepts the family’s insurance. The case manager also suggested that Gali and her other children might need support, and she strongly agreed. Both the mom and Steven’s siblings are now in therapy, working through their emotions and learning how they can best support their son/brother when he returns home.
Steven is now five weeks into his 90 day program and making slow but steady progress. The family recognizes that the healing process will be a journey; but knowing they have the support they need has led to a hopefulness which they have not felt in a long time.
Our case manager continues to follow up and will assist with referrals once Steven is ready to transition to the next level of care.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
