Trigger Warning: Childhood Sexual Abuse

Malka* first contacted Amudim several years ago after discovering that her daughter Baily* had been sexually abused by a cousin. The pain and guilt were overwhelming, but she took the brave step of seeking help. Through Amudim, Baily was referred to a therapist who specialized in childhood sexual abuse. Over time, she began to heal and made significant strides forward.

Fast forward to Bailey finishing seminary and beginning to date. She was self-aware and clear about her intentions for a healthy, trusting relationship. When she became engaged, she shared her past with her chassan. She explained how therapy had helped her heal and expressed confidence that she was prepared to begin this next chapter. Her chassan was on board, offering to support Bailey in whatever she needed as they moved forward with their life together.

The wedding was beautiful. Everything seemed hopeful.

But just days after the chuppah, Bailey confided in her mother that she was struggling. The emotional and physical closeness of marriage was stirring up flashbacks and discomfort that she hadn’t felt in years. She wasn't sure what was happening or how to cope. Malka, concerned, called Amudim again.

We validated her fears and provided psychoeducation about trauma. Her case manager explained that it’s not uncommon for survivors to need renewed support when entering new life stages, particularly marriage, where intimacy can trigger buried trauma. This didn’t mean Bailey had “regressed.” It meant she was human and still healing.

We offered updated referrals for trauma-informed therapists and coached Malka on how to support the couple: being present, patient, and loving while giving them space to build their own relationship dynamic. Meanwhile, Bailey’s husband sought guidance from his chassan rebbi and expressed a desire to walk this path with her.

Bailey began therapy again. Even after just one session, she reported feeling more stable and hopeful. She continues to meet with her therapist weekly. The couple is learning how to communicate, support one another and navigate the realities of trauma with compassion and honesty.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is a phone call away and here to help.
