Free Workshop: Teenage Fun or Fumble?
When we are lucky enough to have a child come to us when he or she needs help, it is essential to listen with empathy and compassion and to find a way to assist them. There are so many individuals who are spiraling or in pain and are unwilling or unable to reach out. If they do, we must be there in any way possible.
Shira* reached out to Amudim about her 17 year-old son, Asher*, who has been struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. He lives at home, and a year ago, Asher began spending time with a group of friends who had drinking parties almost every night; he was coming home drunk on a regular basis and also began experimenting with various drugs. Asher reached a point around six months ago when he realized how badly these habits were affecting his life, and he tried finding a way out on his own, but it was too difficult. When he approached Shira and told her that he needed help, she immediately called us, as she didn’t want to lose this chance when her son was expressing a willingness to change.
Shira’s case manager listened to all of her concerns and validated the difficulty Shira was facing as a parent who just wants to ensure that her son is healthy. They discussed several rehab options, taking into account the family’s insurance and geographical location. Shira also acknowledged that she herself was struggling and needed support, but that seeing Asher successfully set up with a treatment plan was her top priority.
At this point, Asher is attending a weekly program for individuals struggling with addiction. He continues to verbalize a desire to improve and seek out other available venues of support. Our case manager is working to find additional resources that are a best fit for Asher’s needs. She also connected Shira with an online support group for parents of children in similar situations. Both mother and son remain in regular contact with their case manager, and we are hopeful that Asher and his nuclear family will find their way forward to a healthier future.
If you or someone you love is in crisis, please do not hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
