One of the greatest gifts a child can give us to show that we have done our job as parents is a willingness to share and be honest when they need our help. When a child feels unconditional love and believes that she will not be judged, there is no challenge that cannot be overcome with the right resources and assistance.

Sima*, a 15 year-old high school sophomore, reached out, concerned about her wellbeing and unsure of how to handle a difficult situation at her school. While discussing Sima’s fears and assuring her that she did not have to confront them alone, our case manager asked whether any adults were aware of the situation. Thankfully, Sima had felt comfortable telling her mother, who was interested in speaking with us as well. Having this open line of communication was incredibly helpful in assuring that Sima would receive the support she needed.

During a follow up call with both Sima and her mother, Sima shared that she had been spending an alarming amount of time with a teacher who was making her feel unsafe. Sima’s mom felt overwhelmed and shocked and was unsure how to proceed. The case manager worked together with mother and daughter to create a plan that would ensure Sima’s safety as well as the other students, including informing the school administration. They also discussed therapy options for Sima to assist her in processing the situation and developing the right tools to move forward.

Sima’s school is now working through the proper channels to address the teacher’s actions, and Sima has resumed her classes feeling comfortable and secure, knowing that she has her family and the school leadership behind her. We are also working with Sima’s mother to help her cope with this painful challenge; and the case manager continues regular check-ins with all involved parties. We are hopeful that based on the early intervention that was possible due to Sima’s courageous call, she will continue to thrive and succeed as she proceeds through her high school years.
