One of the greatest barriers to providing help is when someone doesn’t want it; the desire to heal or move forward has to come from within. But sometimes, a gentle push from the right person coupled with an openness to listen can be a solid first step in the right direction.

Leora* called us desperate for guidance on how to handle her husband Zev’s* severe alcohol addiction. This is something Zev has been struggling with for many years; while he tried rehab once when they were newly married, he had a negative experience and has since refused treatment. Every time Leora raised the issue since then, Zev got angry or lashed out. They have four young children, and she did not know what to do. After speaking with her family’s rav and his recommending that she call, Leora finally worked up the courage to reach out.

Our case manager spent a long time discussing the numerous options, needing to gauge what Leora wanted and how he could best help her. She expressed a desire to bring Zev into the conversation to see if this time would be different, as she really wants to see him get better and to salvage her family. After discussing ways to convey to Zev that this would be a judgment free zone and that he would not be committing to anything, Leora was able to convince him to call us with her. Thankfully, Zev agreed to give treatment one more chance. He is a dedicated father who wants what’s best for his kids, and he has slowly begun to realize the connection to his own well being. Every person needs to find his/her own catalyst to change when the time is right.

We were able to find an excellent inpatient program close to Zev’s home, and he entered under voluntary admission within the week. He is currently in the middle of treatment, and Leora is attending a weekly Al-anon group for loved ones of individuals fighting addiction. While the road ahead for this family is not short or easy, we are hopeful that with continued support and the right resources, they will find their way to a healthier and happier place.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.

Each week, Amudim fields calls covering a wide range of crises and addressing various human concerns, including addiction, depression, abuse, health and domestic emergencies and many others. We track the calls and breakdown of issues for many reasons, foremost of which is to consistently improve and strengthen our knowledge and ability to address community’s needs.

In the battle against addiction, family and friends are often the true first responders—holding the line, feeling the pain, and carrying the weight of the fight

They say addiction is a family disease because it leaves scars on more than just the one struggling.

If you’re standing on the front lines, know this—we see you, we are here for you, and you are not alone. 💙
