TRIGGER WARNING: SEXUAL ABUSE
Child sexual abuse can leave hidden scars that rise to the surface years later, especially during a significant life transition. And without the appropriate support resources, the damage can impact every aspect of an individual’s life. But there is always hope. Amudim’s mission and goal is to do everything possible to turn that hope into a reality.
Avrohom*, a 33 year-old man who had recently gotten engaged, reached out after a family friend who had previously received help from Amudim suggested that he call. Sadly, dating someone had triggered several strong responses due to the sexual abuse that Avrohom had suffered as an adolescent. He never told his parents nor sought help; and after burying it for so long, Avrohom was too scared as an adult to reopen old wounds. But when he saw how it was affecting his relationship, Avrohom realized that he could no longer ignore what was done to him, and that it was time to find a therapist who could help him move forward.
Our case manager listened to Avrohom’s painful story with compassion and empathy; he reassured him that they would work together to find a trauma trained therapist who was a good fit. Avrohom also had his fiance’s unconditional support. She encouraged him to do whatever it took to find peace, and she assured him that she would be waiting to continue on their journey together when he was ready. Avrohom’s willingness to confide in her and her mature and thoughtful response were fortunate elements of this difficult challenge; Avrohom would not be alone as he began the healing process.
Two months later, Avrohom is continuing his weekly therapy sessions, and he and his fiance are attending couple’s counseling together as well. He is working through the impact of his abuse and developing a strong foundation of tools and skills in order to move past the pain and build a new future for himself and soon-to-be wife. Avrohom’s case manager checks in on a regular basis to continue supporting him every step of the way.
