Struggling with mental health concerns can impact every area of a person’s life, from his work to his relationships to his connection with his family. At times, it can feel like there is no way forward from this lonely and painful place. But with good resources and the right support, there is always hope; and Amudim is committed to assuring every individual who walks through our doors of the possibilities before them.
Nachman*, a 25 year-old man recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder, reached out to us after his older sister suggested he call. He was under the care of a good psychiatrist, but Nachman was having trouble finding a therapist with whom he felt comfortable and could build a rapport. Despite having found a good job, Nachman could not keep up with the other demands of daily life; he was struggling with executive functioning skills and completing tasks, and finding it impossible to date or maintain any meaningful relationships.
The case manager spent some time just listening to Nachman and expressing compassion and empathy for his complex situation. He suggested that perhaps Nachman should take a break from worrying about finding a partner and spend some time prioritizing himself and taking care of his mental health. Nachman agreed, but he noted that he must find a therapist who accepts his insurance; the case manager needed to find an appropriate referral that best fit Nachman’s needs within those parameters. Together, they decided on a national intense outpatient clinic that has a diverse set of clinicians, one of whom could hopefully help our client. This program also offers flexibility in working with a client’s schedule and has virtual options with which Nachman was comfortable.
Two months later, Nachman is getting the help he needs, and his case manager checks in weekly with him and his treatment team to ascertain his progress and reassure Nachman about any concerns that arise. We are hopeful that in time, with continued assistance and the support of his family, Nachman will see that he is able to build a full, productive and meaningful life.
If you or someone you know is in trouble, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
