Unity in Healing
December 2, 2022

Abuse of any kind leaves scars, both visible and within, and the after effects can emerge suddenly and unexpectedly based on each individual’s circumstances. The most essential key to combating the pain and finding comfort is having a united front of support in someone’s corner, ensuring that he/she is not alone and knows that there are people rooting for him or her.

Ben* recently started his senior year and was excited to reconnect with friends and commence on this exciting last part of his high school experience. But just a few weeks later, Ben began exhibiting worrisome changes in his moods and behavior; after a long and difficult conversation with his worried parents, Ben told them that he was experiencing triggers based on two years of having been sexually abused at summer camp when he was younger.

Unsure of what to do to help their son and how to process this devastating information, Ben’s parents spoke with his rebbe, who suggested that they reach out to Amudim. Our case manager first spoke with the parents to provide a safe space for them to voice their concerns and pain upon learning what had been done to their son. He suggested that Ben begin therapy as soon as possible; and after guiding the parents through the application process, we were able to secure partial funding for Ben’s treatment through Project Heal, our division dedicated to assisting victims of sexual abuse and trauma. Our case manager also recommended therapy for Ben’s parents to work through their emotions and to learn about the best ways they can support their son on his journey to healing.

It has been two months since Ben began therapy; we are in regular contact with him and his parents and are happy to report that while there is still a difficult road in front of them, everyone is happy to be facing this together with the knowledge that a brighter future lies ahead. Ben is doing better in school, feeling strong that he has the unconditional support of his family and teachers.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
