This is a story of a young girl in crisis due to prior abuse, and a mom and family suffering through the impact the circumstances have wrought on their life. One individual’s pain and trauma do not exist in a vacuum. But when we are able to address the root issue and assist with the far reaching impacts, it is possible to bring a family back together and to a healthier place.
Talia’s* mother reached out to Amudim desperate for guidance on how to help her daughter; Talia was suffering from an eating disorder that had first developed after she was abused by a family friend several years earlier. Although Talia was in therapy, the eating disorder was getting worse. Her mother wanted so badly to support her daughter, but she also found herself falling apart due to the stress and time she was devoting to this ongoing crisis; and she was neglecting herself and her other children in the process.
This case clearly needed a multi faceted approach. Thankfully, our case manager was quickly able to find an in-patient facility for Talia to begin treatment; it was covered by the family’s insurance, and Talia adapted quickly to this new and more intense therapeutic environment.
Meanwhile, we had to help her mom. Her anxiety was skyrocketing and the other kids were acting out or seemed sullen all the time. Her young infant was constantly crying. While Talia was getting the appropriate care, our case manager found her mom a therapist and supported her throughout the process, providing psychoeducation on the need to care for herself. We found the mom a support group and encouraged her to take up former hobbies like painting, and to make the time to take walks and get out several times a week. All of this enabled the mom to be more present for both Talia and the rest of her family, and Baruch Hashem, the situation began to improve.
Thankfully, everyone is now in a more healthy place working on their own healing; we are hopeful that the domino effect we set in motion will continue to yield positive results.
