Finding the Will to Survive
June 24, 2022

When a person has lost any sense of purpose or hope, the consequences can be devastating. And the pain of watching a child endure this type of suffering can be too much to bear. But no one has to go through this alone. Even when circumstances seem bleak, helping a person find the will to fight past his struggles and heal is one of Amudim’s primary missions, a battle never worth surrendering.

Chana* called the helpline for her teenage son, Moshe*, at a loss of what to do. Moshe had recently been hospitalized after a suicide attempt, and his mother did not know what the next steps should be once the emergency hold was lifted. After a thorough intake, our case manager reached out to Moshe’s therapist, psychiatrist and his rebbe at school in an attempt to further understand Moshe’s situation and history. They spoke of a boy who had been suffering with depression and struggling to find purpose; and while he had last seen his therapist only two weeks earlier, the situation had clearly deteriorated. The hospital Moshe was taken to was not ideal for his needs, and after several phone calls, his case manager was successful in having him transferred to a better location.

Over the next few weeks, we maintained regular contact with Moshe and his mother as he was attending an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), to which he had been sent after leaving the hospital. We needed to find a solution where Moshe could go for the best support to ensure stable and healthy long term goals. The case manager found out about a scholarship bed available at a rehab center that sounded perfect; she facilitated connecting the IOP to the treatment program to ensure a smooth transition for Moshe once he was ready to transfer. Baruch Hashem, Moshe is currently doing very well at the rehab center. His mother and family are relieved that he is finally getting the right assistance; and we are hopeful that in time, Moshe can look forward to a brighter and happier reality.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and ready to help.
