When we say it takes a village, we’re not only referring to the communal help that’s needed to get someone through a challenge; we’re also talking about the preemptive action that is each person’s responsibility when he/she sees a potential problem. When we band together and remember that we are all our brother’s keeper, there is no struggle too great to overcome.

Dina* called Amudim for guidance on how to best help her 14 year-old daughter, Shira*, who had been exhibiting concerning changes in behavior for several weeks. Shira was falling asleep in class, had stopped socializing, and her grades had dramatically dropped. It was one of Shira’s teachers who first noticed this trend, and she immediately reached out to Dina, who was grateful for the teacher’s awareness but unsure how to move forward. Dina recalled her daughter having spoken with the school guidance counselor, and she decided to contact her. It was the guidance counselor who suggested Dina call us. This trajectory of communication epitomizes the message we hope to convey to every individual: if you see something, say something; don’t ignore troubling signs or assume that someone else will speak up.

Our case manager conducted a thorough intake with Dina, discussing family dynamics, the changes in Shira’s behavior, and how Dina could help her daughter. The first step was referring Shira to a psychologist for an evaluation, after which everyone would regroup to address the best way forward.
The case manager also encouraged Dina to connect with a therapist for her own support needs. Dina was initially hesitant, sharing that it felt too overwhelming to pursue care for herself while her daughter was struggling. While those concerns were validated, we emphasized the importance of Dina’s looking after her own wellbeing so that she could find the strength and balance to assist Shira. We don't yet know what the journey ahead for this mother and daughter will look like, but we must ensure that they avail themselves of all the resources that can compel a successful outcome.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
