Navigating a Difficult Journey
January 27, 2023

Life can be scary for everyone at times; and when daily expectations are compounded by mental health crises, a situation can spiral out of control. The good news is that there are a myriad of resources available to assist anyone in finding the help he/she needs to establish a sense of equilibrium and comfort.

As Kayla* was approaching the end of her junior year of high school, she began suffering first from minor breakdowns that eventually escalated to psychotic episodes. She had struggled with mental health challenges for several years; but the situation had worsened, and Kayla was struggling to navigate her daily life and peer interaction because of the frightening incidents that came without warning.

At her parents’ encouragement, Kayla reached out to Amudim for guidance and options. Our case manager first directed Kayla to a teen residential program, a safe space where she underwent a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Her treatment team addressed the history of psychosis and prescribed medication to help stabilize Kayla’s state of mind so that she could begin the work on returning to 'normalcy. Kayla also began attending individual therapy sessions as well as participating in groups focused on CBT treatment.

Family therapy was also an integral part of Kayla’s recovery; she and her parents met each week with a therapist to learn how to communicate and how they could best support their daughter. Throughout this complex process, our case manager worked with Kayla’s treatment team, monitoring her progress and searching for appropriate after care/step down programs.

Over a year later, we are excited to report that Kayla is in seminary in Israel for the year, and she is doing really well. It has been a long and often difficult journey; but Kayla has reached a good place where she has established solid friendships and is learning to be independent. Kayla continues to work with a therapist that we helped connect her with in Israel; and she is utilizing the tools she learned in treatment and therapy to live a balanced and healthy life.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
