Navigating the Spectrum
June 3, 2022

Each of our children has unique needs and challenges; and as parents, it can be difficult to navigate the various struggles that sometimes arise. They say that a mother is as happy as her unhappiest child; and in order for a family unit to thrive, the leader must balance caring for herself while ensuring that the needs of everyone else are being met as well. The good news is that no one has to do this alone; there are resources and experts available, and Amudim is here to help access whatever any given individual needs.

Sarah*, a mother of five, reached out to us about her son, Baruch*, a 12 year-old boy with a recent diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, who had been kicked out of school for causing disruptions in class. After several months of Baruch’s staying home every day being unproductive and with outbursts that were negatively impacting his siblings, Sarah called Amudim, desperate for guidance on how to help her son and her family. Baruch’s school was understanding of the complexity of the situation and willing to let him return if he began seeing a psychiatrist on a regular basis and was put on appropriate meditation; the principal told Sarah about Amudim and its potential to assist in finding the right support. She finally called when she realized that there might be no other way for her son to ever return to school and that she couldn’t do this on her own.

Through building rapport with Sarah and hearing more about Baruch and his history, the case manager was able to connect him with a psychiatrist at a clinic that accepted their insurance. With a combination of medication as well as weekly therapy sessions, Baruch was able to go back to school with a more stable and consistent schedule in place; and he has shown improvement in his behavior both in class and at home. Our case manager continues to check in with Sarah on a regular basis to see how everyone is managing; and Sarah has expressed that she is relieved to finally see her son truly happy and getting the help that he needs.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to assist in any way possible.
