Solitary Confinement

Being alone is a terrible state for anyone; when the situation is compounded by several mental health struggles and no one to turn to, it feels debilitating on a constant basis. But Amudim was established based on the essential value that no one should have to face his/her challenges alone; and with the right guidance, a person will find his/ her way.

Ben*, a junior in college, called us seeking help and direction after seeing one of our Instagram posts. Estranged from his family, his goals to support himself and maintain solid academic footing had taken a steep decline as his struggles with social anxiety, depression and OCD had reached a breaking point. It was severe enough that the external sounds and stimuli of campus life were causing Ben enough stress to hinder daily life activities.

Our case manager quickly realized that Ben not only had no emotional family support, but he was also lacking any mental health support. Ben was retreating into himself; he was neglecting his basic hygiene and physical needs and lacked the confidence and motivation to care for himself. Ben’s case manager worked rapidly to connect him with an appropriate therapist located near his school, who began working with him on a weekly basis. She also referred Ben to a psychiatrist who prescribed medication that began helping him want to get out of bed each morning and increased his overall motivation and desire to get well.

After working in tandem for several weeks, both Ben’s case manager and his therapist felt that he might benefit from inpatient treatment, to which he agreed; we worked to find and get Ben admitted to the best possible program for his needs. After some time and intense work, Ben began to see significant progress; and he is now in the aftercare phase and continues to see his therapist and psychiatrist regularly. We are happy to report that Ben is living on his own, back in school and working part time. While he continues to have some difficult days, Ben feels like he is on the right path and facing his obstacles with hope and determination for a brighter future.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please call us. Amudim is here and ready to help.
