Fixing What's Broken
June 9 2023

Sometimes it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day. Enough time to work, spend time with family, manage the errands that need to be completed, and most importantly, take care of yourself. When you are juggling so many balls, it is inevitable that some will begin to fall. But when a person steps back and realizes that prioritizing one’s health and family life is paramount, Amudim is here to offer support in finding that lost but essential balance.

Avi* reached out for guidance on how to deal with challenges he was facing as both a husband and father. Married for twenty years with four children, Avi spent most days telling himself that this was life and there was nothing to be done to improve his situation. But when his 14 year-old son was suspended from school for destructive behavior, it was the wake up call Avi needed to ask for help.

Our case manager conducted a thorough intake to determine the timeline of how Avi’s home life had deteriorated, and how Amudim could best recommend support for the various factors at stake. Avi spoke about having gotten married at a young age; he grew up in a dysfunctional home with no healthy model of how to build a strong and positive relationship. Life got busy with his career and raising the kids, and Avi never found the time to work through his own childhood trauma.

Our case manager first recommended that Avi begin individual therapy; he connected him with a therapist that fit Avi’s financial constraints, and Avi immediately began weekly sessions. We further suggested family therapy for Avi, his wife, and eventually the children to join when the timing was right; the goal was to get Avi to a place where he felt strong enough to tackle the daunting but achievable goal of rebuilding his marriage and helping his son.

Avi has now been in therapy for several months; and while he still struggles with moving on from his past in order to reach a healthier place, he has faith that with his wife’s continued support and the work they are doing to heal their family, there is hope for a happy future.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
