Two out of twelve months each year-May and October- are designated nationally as times to be cognizant of mental health, depression and the need for regular screenings. The statistics seem grim; millions each year in America alone suffer from a mental health disorder or are facing a mental health crisis, and the numbers continue to increase. But Amudim was founded on two essential principles: an all too real awareness of the uphill challenge we face in tackling this issue, and an unwavering commitment to and faith in the idea that it is a war worth fighting every day…and that every life we help or save is a battle won.
Aaron*, a 22 year-old living alone and across the country, called after seeing one of Amudim’s PSA videos. He had been struggling with severe ADHD since childhood; never properly treated, this led to feelings of depression and anxiety and an inability to develop the social skills needed to create a stable network of friends and support. Aaron felt isolated, insecure and misunderstood, and despaired of ever finding a way out of this dark place.
Our case manager conducted a long and thorough intake, providing emotional support and reassuring Aaron that he would not be alone as they worked together to find the assistance he needed. Three therapists came to mind that seemed like a good fit; thankfully, Aaron connected with one of them and began weekly sessions. He also maintained regular contact with his case manager as he progressed on his journey towards healing and establishing a healthier life for himself.
As October approaches, we are happy to report that Aaron has been in therapy for several months and reports feeling more secure, able to express himself, and ready to begin letting others in. What could have become another dreaded statistic will hopefully be a successful victory in the fight to ensure that every individual knows that he/she has value to offer the world and can have a happy and stable life.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is here and ready to help.
