TRIGGER WARNING! Domestic Abuse

Nobody wants to be labeled a victim; and many people who are suffering at the hands of a family member often don’t seek assistance because they are scared no one will believe them or they worry that there will be retribution. Statistics show that it can take multiple attempts over time, along with outside encouragement and support, for an abused individual to come forward. Our hope to resolve this sad reality is twofold: raising community awareness regarding domestic violence and helping any individual who approaches us get the support they need.

After seeing an ad for Amudim in her local community paper, Dina* worked up the courage to call Amudim, fearful and desperate for help. After being reassured that our call line is safe and confidential, Dina admitted that her spouse has been emotionally and verbally abusive for several years, and it has recently gotten worse. Our case manager could sense just how scared Dina was in that she would not even disclose her last name for fear of her husband discovering that she had called. After providing validation and reassuring Dina that she had done the right thing, the case manager detailed a safety plan and began searching for a therapist that was an appropriate fit. She also asked Dina whether there were any other family members living at home; Dina shared that all of her children are married or living on their own.

We connected Dina with a therapist who specializes in domestic abuse, and Dina consented to having her case manager speak with the therapist to work together to manage her care and assure her safety. Dina also has weekly check-ins where she calls at a set time and day to let us know that she’s okay. Thankfully, Dina now has a team of support behind her working to assist with a plan to move forward and to maintain her emotional and mental wellbeing. And Dina feels hopeful about the future now that she knows she is not alone.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
