Caring for Those Who Care
March 31, 2023

Becoming a part of the “sandwich” generation is never an easy task; a person finds himself providing for himself and/or his children while having to step into the reversed role of caregiver for aging parents. It is a part of the cycle of life; although we all hope and pray for every member of our family to remain independent and healthy while blessed with longevity and joy. But for the unfortunate scenario when a person is no longer able to manage alone, Amudim is here as a source of guidance and support for the individual and his/her loved ones.

Aryeh* is a 60 year-old only child born to Holocaust survivors. After being referred to us by a community member, Aryeh called inquiring about assistance with caring for his elderly parents. He shared the pressures and difficulties involved in being the sole caregiver; and our case manager listened with sympathy, giving Aryeh all the time he needed to unburden himself. After discussing his parents’ needs, the case manager was able to gather a list of resources geared towards addressing Aryeh’s parents’ emotional, mental and physical challenges. They worked together to select the programs that would best suit his parents’ situation logistically and based on their history and current status.

Aryeh’s parents are now thankfully being helped by an incredible network of individuals and organizations who are available and more than happy to assist with caring for two survivors and ensuring their comfort and dignity. Aryeh is grateful to have found Amudim as a pathway towards helping his parents while gaining some much needed respite. Cases like these always feel particularly sensitive and special as we honor the ever and sadly dwindling number of Holocaust survivors as best we can.

If you or a loved one is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help in any way possible.
