Sign Up Therapy Should Work Event
We cannot protect our children from every danger, but we can educate them at every stage to give them the necessary tools to take care, to self advocate and to be comfortable with their bodies. Rina*, a 32 year-old mom of four, called our office concerned about her 6 year-old daughter, Miri*. Rina had recently discovered Rina pulling down her skirt and undergarments along with her younger sister. Rina was shocked and scared, unsure of how to handle the situation. She had seen an Amudim instagram post about child safety, so she reached out for guidance.
Our case manager validated Rina’s concerns and helped her address the pressing questions that were running through her mind: Has this happened before? What does it mean? Are my children safe? What should I do next? The case manager reassured Rina that they would work together and that age appropriate sexual education is important at every stage of childhood. Rina felt unsure of how to speak with her girls; they reviewed what was appropriate along with several book recommendations. Our case manager also suggested separate therapists for each of Rina’s daughters to discuss what happened. Initially, Rina felt that it was too soon and that Miri and her sister would likely forget the incident. Her case manager acknowledged that it might seem like a minor event and that it most likely was not something to worry about. That being said, it would be better to address what took place in a safe space with no shame than to ignore the situation. After a follow up call, Rina agreed and scheduled intakes for each of her girls.
After several weeks, Rina reported that her younger daughter had found play therapy helpful and effective; the therapist concluded that only a few sessions were needed at this time. As for Miri, she is continuing weekly therapy and Rina is happy to note that she is thriving. Rina is grateful to have found a way to process and take action after this event instead of allowing her initial reaction to hinder her from moving forward and doing what’s best for her children.
