Supporting Students Through Crisis
A Resource Hub for Parents and Educators
At Amudim, we recognize the immense responsibility that educators and parents carry in guiding students through life’s most difficult moments. When tragedy strikes—whether through a crisis, loss, or death by suicide—schools and families need clear guidance, compassionate support, and immediate resources.
This page is designed to provide those critical tools, ensuring that no parent, teacher, or administrator navigates this alone.
Immediate Steps After a Crisis
For School Administrators and Educators
✅ Initial Communication: Speak with the family first to confirm what they are comfortable sharing. Follow their lead in how the tragedy is communicated to staff, parents, and students. Avoid speculation and unnecessary details.
✅ Mental Health Professional Support: Organize an immediate session with a qualified mental health professional to provide guidance for staff and students. Ensure that emotional regulation strategies are in place.
✅ Monitor for Trauma Responses: Be alert for shifts in behavior, energy levels, appetite, or speech that may indicate distress. Some reactions may surface immediately, while others can take weeks to emerge.
✅ Avoid Blame and Misinformation: Ensure that all communication avoids placing blame while still educating on mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
For Parents and Guardians
✅ Open and Honest Conversations: Depending on the child’s age, provide age-appropriate explanations and reassurance. Avoid graphic details but acknowledge the loss.
✅ Observe Behavioral Changes: Watch for changes in sleeping, eating, or emotional regulation that may indicate grief or trauma responses.
✅ Encourage Peer Support: Ensure your child has a trusted adult or support system available. Foster open conversations without forcing discussions.
✅ Seek Professional Guidance When Needed: If your child is struggling, professional intervention may be necessary. We can connect you with trusted mental health resources.
Long-Term Considerations & Preventative Measures
In the weeks and months following a crisis, the focus should shift toward healing, prevention, and mental health education.
✅ Commemorative and Awareness Events: Some families may choose to hold a memorial or awareness program to honor a lost student and raise awareness about mental health. Schools can facilitate these discussions respectfully.
✅ Implementing an SEL Curriculum: Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) can help students build emotional resilience and coping mechanisms. Consider incorporating resources like Darcheinu or Our Path SEL.
✅ Training for Educators and Parents: Schools can provide professional development for educators to recognize warning signs and implement crisis intervention strategies.
