As we are in the middle of Alcohol Awareness month and also immersed in the often challenging period between Purim and Pesach, I’d like to share a story about a woman who is fighting the battle of her life to heal and find a way back to her family.
Fay* is a 35 year-old mother of three who was struggling with severe alcohol addiction. By the time her parents reached out to us, she had moved back into their home, as she was not functioning as a wife or mother. Fay could not hold down a job, and her marriage was on the brink of collapse.
Her mom called, desperate for guidance on how to help her daughter. She heard of Amudim from friends who had also sought out our services when their loved ones were dealing with the results of alcohol abuse. Finances were limited, and Fay's mother was seeking support to help her daughter find a way towards recovery for herself and to save her family from breaking apart. Our case manager praised the mother’s bravery, empathized with how painful it is to see one’s child in pain, and expressed understanding that it is difficult to think logically under acute, difficult circumstances.
Our case manager was able to locate a residential rehab center near Fay’s parents’ home that accepted her insurance; and she worked together with the family to coordinate the paperwork and convince Fay to get the help she needed. Thankfully, Fay agreed to go; even at her darkest points, she still knew that she wanted to find a way back to a healthier place.
While Fay is still in treatment, her parents feel hopeful as they continue to support her on this journey. Fay’s husband is also now involved, speaking with our case manager and Fay’s care team to learn how he can best assist his wife and learn tools to rebuild their relationship as Fay proceeds through recovery. We have also suggested support groups for Fay’s mother, ensuring that she cares for her own needs while helping care for her daughter and grandchildren. The process is far from over; but we are grateful to be able to guide Fay and her family as they move forward to a healthier and happy future.
