Facing a Son’s Struggles

While there are some ailments, once identified, that can be healed smoothly and quickly, others unfortunately require more complicated and long term care. And when physical symptoms are exacerbated by emotional or mental health crises, it can be exponentially more painful to handle. But once someone finds the right assistance and resources, this burden can become lighter and more realistic to manage.

We received a call from Faigy*, a 37 year-old mom of three, who has been struggling with her son, Akiva*, and needed guidance with an ongoing situation that had quickly spiraled. Several years ago, Akiva was diagnosed with lyme disease, which led to chronic behavior challenges, including acting out physically against his family and friends. Faigy has been to many specialists seeking help for her son, with mixed and short term results. When she reached out, Akiva had reached crisis levels; he was threatening to kill himself, staying locked in his room for days, and acting physically violent to his mother and siblings. Faigy was exhausted from the many failed attempts to help her son and did not know what to do next.

Our case manager expressed sympathy and understanding of the challenging environment that Akiva had created in the home while acknowledging Faigy’s steadfast love and support for her son. The case manager reassured Faigy that Amudim would be there to stand alongside her family and do everything in our power to help Akiva and her other children. We are currently in the beginning stages of helping Faigy secure the correct funding to subsidize Akiva’s attendance at a therapeutic school that can best address his complex needs. Faigy’s case manager is also working to find the right therapist for Akiva’s siblings and parents to help them navigate this difficult space.

While this family’s situation does not have a quick or easy fix, Faigy feels reassured that Akiva is on the road to finding a safe and appropriate environment conducive to his healing, and she is hopeful that her family can now find a way forward to a healthier place.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
