At 21 years old, Josh* found himself at a crossroads. For several years, he had been struggling with substance dependence that slowly began shaping most of his daily life. What initially felt manageable had become something much heavier, affecting Josh’s motivation, emotional wellbeing and vision for the future. Although Josh had previously tried individual therapy and even spent time in rehab programs encouraged by others around him, lasting change never fully took hold because he was not yet ready to make that decision for himself.

Recently, however, something shifted.

Josh began noticing older individuals still trapped in the same cycle he feared for himself: struggling to move forward, build healthy relationships and function independently while substance use continued to quietly control their lives. Seeing that reality forced him to confront an uncomfortable question - What if this is what my future looks like?

As his thoughts turned to dating, starting a family one day and finding a meaningful career, Josh recognized that he did not want substance use to define who he is or stand in the way of the life he hopes to create. Josh mentioned this to his sister, who had heard about Amudim through a podcast, and she encouraged him to reach out.

During conversations with his case manager, Josh showed honesty and a willingness to take responsibility, despite how difficult and overwhelming that first step can feel. Together, they discussed appropriate referrals, ways to involve family support, and treatment options that could help Josh address not only the substance use but the underlying emotional patterns connected to it.

Josh may still have a long road ahead, but this time the motivation is coming from within. Instead of feeling pushed by others, he is beginning to take ownership of the path forward and what that will look like.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.

When We Did It Right and It Was Still Hard

The messy middle of helping our children grow.

We have spent a lot of time this past month talking about building skills in our children, and about the importance of modeling those skills ourselves first. But today, we want to say the quiet part out loud:

Sometimes, you can do everything “the right way,” and it still feels completely wrong.

The Power of "Yet"

Resilience and self-worth are built in the uncomfortable space between “I can’t do this” and “I got it.”

When we stay close without immediately fixing, we help our children learn that struggle does not mean they are failing – it means they are learning.

The word “yet” helps reframe the messages of doubt running through their minds. It gives them room to keep growing, while reminding them that their worth was never on the line.
