For years, Chaim* had been struggling. Depression and anxiety was gradually compounded by substance use, and by the age of 38, addiction had taken hold of his life. Chaim had been in and out of treatment without lasting success. More recently, the situation had deteriorated further. Chaim was finding it difficult to meet his basic needs and was sleeping on the streets.

Chaim’s older brother watched helplessly as someone he loved slipped further away.

Then Chaim said something that gave him hope-he wanted help.

His brother knew how significant that was, but he also knew that willingness alone wouldn't get Chaim into the right treatment. After the previous unsuccessful attempts, he didn't know where to turn or what kind of program his brother needed. At the suggestion of a close family friend, he called Amudim.

The case manager listened as Chaim's brother described the years of struggle, failed treatment attempts and his fear that this opportunity could disappear if they didn't act quickly. She reassured him that he didn't have to figure out the next steps alone and they began exploring treatment options.

After consulting with several programs, the case manager identified an appropriate treatment center and first helped arrange immediate detox. She remained involved in coordinating a smooth transition into longer-term treatment, ensuring that there would be continuity rather than another gap in care.

With the right program in place, Chaim has begun the work of recovery. The adjustment was difficult at first, but with support from the program's clinical team, he is seeing meaningful progress. Chaim is participating in groups, engaging in treatment and slowly beginning to pick up the pieces of his life. His case manager remains in contact with Chaim’s treatment team to follow his progress. She has also begun conversations with Chaim’s brother and other family members of how to best support Chaim upon his return home.
There is still a long road ahead. But when Chaim was ready to accept help, his brother made sure someone was there to help them find the way forward.

If you or someone you love is in crisis, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.

Weekly-Case-Chart-Amudim-Aug-28

Each week, Amudim fields calls covering a wide range of crises and addressing various human concerns, including addiction, depression, abuse, health and domestic emergencies and many others. We track the calls and breakdown of issues for many reasons, foremost of which is to consistently improve and strengthen our knowledge and ability to address community’s needs.

what-we-see

What we see on the outside does not always tell us the whole story.

We don’t have to overread every mood or difficult day. We can stay connected, notice the patterns, keep the conversation open, and reach out when we are unsure.

For additional support, Amudim is here at (646) 517-0222.

Talking about Therapy

When our child needs help understanding something in school, we don’t assume they are the problem. We recognize that some things are easier to work through with the right support.

Therapy can be much the same. Sometimes the problem isn’t our teen, and it isn’t us. We may love each other deeply and still get stuck in patterns where what one person means isn’t what the other hears.

Therapy can help us understand what is getting lost and find better ways to reach one another. When we speak about it as support, we make it easier for our teens to see it that way too.
