It’s the discovery no parent ever wants to make, that their child has been the victim of sexual abuse. While this is a painful process that triggers a variety of emotions, being proactive in supporting and advocating for the child is the only path forward to helping him heal.
Yael*, a single mother with three children, called us shocked, scared, and needing guidance on how best to get support for her son, Avi*.
It began as many of these unfortunate incidents do, with what seemed like a harmless online interaction. Avi was groomed by an adult stranger for several months before they met in person, which began a long period of sexual abuse of which no one was aware. Because Avi developed a confusing attachment to his predator, a common occurrence, he did not know to share what was happening. When Yael found the website where Avi had been messaging with his abuser, she recalled hearing about Amudim from a friend and reached out for assistance.
As Yael and Avi’s case manager spoke, it became apparent that he needed immediate and intensive individual therapy. They discussed what had happened and explored therapists that could help Avi work through this traumatic experience. Yael and our case manager also spoke about the legal aspects of the situation and he provided referrals for lawyers that might be able to help.
At this point, Avi wanted nothing more than to find a way to feel better. We were able to connect him with a clinician who specializes in childhood sexual trauma, and they began sessions two days later. Avi is currently working through his painful experience with his therapist and focusing on gaining the necessary skills and tools to cope with what he has been through. While Avia is making tremendous strides, he would like to continue therapy for as long as possible because he sees the significant changes in how he is feeling versus before starting therapy. Yael has been a tremendous source of encouragement and strength for her son; and she is working with one of the lawyers we recommended to pursue legal action against the abuser.
