Most of the issues we deal with don’t exist in a vacuum; they were either created or determined by other internal factors or external challenges. While this compels the difficult task of addressing a problem on multiple fronts, doing so ensures the best chance of a successful outcome for those who come to us for support.
Shoshana*, a 21 year-old living on her own, had hit rock bottom. She was suffering from a severe eating disorder that had developed as a result of trauma from childhood sexual abuse, and was no longer able to function in her daily life. Thankfully, she had a close friend who saw Shoshana wasting away; and she convinced her to reach out to Amudim. Shoshana agreed, though she was skeptical there was any help to be found.
Our case manager spoke with Shoshana on several occasions, explaining that helping her heal would be a multi-step process, and that she would not be alone for any part of the journey. Shoshana needed assistance getting back to a healthy caloric intake, finding a safe place to process her trauma, and creating goals of what a life worth living to her looked like.
We reached out to a wonderful treatment center that focuses specifically on trauma based disordered eating. After numerous discussions filled with encouragement and sympathy, Shoshana agreed to enter the program. She is currently getting the help that she needs; and we are in continuous contact with her therapists and doctors, ensuring that we can help Shoshana progress in a positive way once she is discharged.
This will not be a short or easy road. For this type of eating disorder, the next step will be a PHP, or partial hospitalization, followed by a slightly less rigorous yet still intensive outpatient program. To fully beat this and find the will to believe in herself and fight to survive, Shoshana will also need therapy, a dietician, and group support. We are here to help connect her with those resources as each need arises, and will see this through together with Shoshana until she has reached a healthy and safe space of healing.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
