Starting Over
May 5th, 2023

Home is supposed to be the place of solace and safety upon which we rely when the outside world sends us challenges. But unfortunately, those struggles and painful events sometimes stem from the home. While it can be a terrible and difficult path to start anew without that backbone of love, Amudim is here to ensure that the essentials of a home-unconditional support and caring-can be found elsewhere when needed.

Sarah* reached out to us in great distress looking for help and guidance in navigating the sudden and terrible situation in which she found herself.

Before the call, Sarah had been living at home and was being physically abused. She had also been manipulated into believing that she was the cause of all of her family’s problems, including the break up of her parents’ marriage and one of her siblings “going off the derech.” At a certain point, Sarah finally reached her breaking point and decided to leave home; when she called us, she was homeless and needed assistance in finding immediate housing and a therapist to help her deal with the multiple layers of trauma she had faced.

After a thorough intake, our case manager determined that an outpatient program was the best route to help Sarah address the PTSD she was experiencing. We also helped connect her with an individual therapist to help Sarah regain the self-esteem she had lost after the years of abuse, and the confidence she needed to get back on her feet.

We are happy to report that Sarah is currently mid- treatment and doing well. She has gained the coping skills to manage her PTSD; and although she still has triggers, Sarah can now assess and evaluate how to properly deal with them. Our case manager remains in regular contact with both Sarah and her treatment team to ensure that her journey towards healing is proceeding in a positive way, and to suggest ideas and alternatives if and when it hits a roadblock. We were also able to help Sarah find short term housing with a family until she can figure out the best next steps.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
