Humans are social beings; everyone needs their “people,” those who will love and support them unconditionally. It is essential for anyone to thrive, and even more so for those facing internal challenges that inherently lead to feeling isolated. One of our primary missions is to ensure that those most in need of an authentic and helpful connection will find it when they pick up the phone to call.
After reading about Amudim’s services in a weekly Jewish publication, Shaya*, a 43 year-old single man, decided to reach out. He was struggling with dating and finding a lasting relationship due to this ADHD and general anxiety, which he had been battling since his late teens. After over two decades of trying to find connection with his family and an eventual life partner, Shaya felt suffocated and alone. The pain had become too overwhelming to bear; and when Shaya saw our ad, he decided it might be time to seek outside assistance.
It took two long and complex conversations for Shaya’s case manager to learn the full history and assess how best to help his client move forward. Despite having worked up the courage to call, Shaya seemed hopeless and stuck and was skeptical about anyone being able to help him. Our case manager provided some much needed empathy and compassion and held space for Shaya’s emotions. Eventually, he gently suggested that Shaya might benefit from seeing a therapist as well as speaking with a rabbi for spiritual counsel. He spent time researching appropriate referrals for both, and Shaya began weekly sessions with a clinician who was just a short walk away from his home.
Over the past several months, Shaya’s improvement has been slow and steady as he unpacks and works through his mental health challenges and fights to forge a path forward to a healthier life and future. He no longer feels alone, knowing that he has a team supporting and rooting for him; and we are hopeful that in time, Shaya will find the right match, equipped with the tools to build a happy and meaningful marriage.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
